In 2015 Maggie Smith took a trip to Cuba where she photographed two boys sitting on a wall. The image could have been taken that year or in 1955. The slow pace of life south of the United States was defined by the use of horse and cart for transportation and by old American cars lining the streets. These two boys seemed the epitome of that lifestyle.

Maggie’s work focuses on timeliness themes and images and is inspired by Colorado animals and current events, as reflected in her series We the People, and In the Time of Covid, and of course, travels around the world. Therefore, it’s no surprise that transportation plays a role in Maggie’s dreams where she is getting on and off buses, trains and airplanes, or where she finds herself on the wrong bus/train/plane or going the wrong way. When life hands her the unexpected, she observes to see what it will bring or where it will lead her. We are so glad she follows those trails in order to create the work she does.
