Behind the Winter 2024 Cover

June 24, 2024 a white bison was born in the wild. According to the National Park Service, “the birth of a white bison calf in the wild is believed to occur in 1 in 1 million births or even less frequently.” The birth is a signal that change is coming and can be both a “blessing and a warning,” according to Simon Moya-Smith, an Oglala Lakota writer. For this issue, we wanted to explore the notion of awe and the sacred, but with a focus on Routt County wildlife. We worked with artist Attila Feszt to create a white stag, as a symbol of the blessings present in our daily lives and the warnings or uncertainty of change that is rapidly unfolding in the world around us. You can find more of Attila’s work at Pine Moon Fine Art gallery.
